Five Ingredients to a Healthy Lifestyle

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

I have a serious case of white coat syndrome. So bad that often the doctors, nurses, or assistants take my blood pressure multiple times to make sure I am okay. Most cases, they are still not happy with my reading and request follow up work. I don't know what it is but my blood pressure just skyrockets the instant I walk into a doctors office. Even the eye doctor.

I used to check my blood pressure once a week at the grocery store while shopping. It would always show normal, or better than normal. I keep track of my readings as proof that it's not me. The opposite of a teenage breakup - It's not you, it's me.

I was beyond excited when I was sent a MeasuPro BPM-80A Blood Pressure Monitor because I would no longer have to spend the extra time at the grocery store getting my reading. Not only does it store my readings, but it stores a second user as well. Win for the Husband!

But how do I keep my reading low? How do I maintain a healthy lifestyle? I stick to 5 main ingredients to keep my heart happy and my life long. Hopefully.

Five Ingredients to a Healthy Lifestyle

1. Water. And lots of it.
Okay, to be honest I suck at this one. I pour myself a glass of water then 2 hours later I realize I only had one sip. I've tried adding fruit and drinking it warm. I am just not a huge fan of water but drink as much as I can.

2. Supplements. I know I don't get all of my dietary needs through my food even though I try to incorporate a variety of foods. Multivitamins allow me to get the vitamins I might miss throughout the day.

3. Fruits. Fruits. And veggies.
I like fruit probably because it is nature's candy. Veggies are great too but not always as tasty of a snack as grabby a juicy orange.

4. Fitness or staying active. Even if I only take the pup for a walk I try and get a daily dose of fitness.

5. Fresh air. I don't think there is anything better for the soul, and heart, than stepping outside to get some fresh air. I believe taking 10 minutes outside helps to lower stress. So go do it now.

How do you live a healthy lifestyle?

Backyard BBQ, New Home, Wedding Flowers and more

Thursday, April 9, 2015

Today is a very exciting day! All of our belongings have been delivered to the new house and now it really feels like we moved. Let me tell you how weird it is to own two houses (one in Indiana and one in Maryland) and be stuck in a hotel for several days because all of your belongings are en route.

I posted this lovely photo on Instagram the other day and I really just can't believe this is my backyard. I see many drinks, gatherings, coffees in pajamas, blog writing, puppy lounging, and relaxing times spent on this deck. It's perfect and huge, and I already have a lot planned for it.

Pillow - Hayneedle // Drop leaf table - Ikea // Bench - Ikea
Luminary - Home Depot // Chiminea - Lowe's // Conversation set - Walmart

What I am most excited for is dressing the table with fresh flowers. I have never really had a knack for putting together flower or is it floral arrangements and typically just purchase bouquets from the grocery store - gasp! Occasionally I will order an arrangement from a florist if I need the flowers for a special occasion.

I was contacted by Bloominous to compose a post that was wedding focused to showcase their DIY flower kits. Well sometimes we all need to break the rules!! After I browsed their website and social media accounts for oh, an hour or so, I realized their flower kits aren't only for weddings but they would work for any occasion. Okay sure, you might not need a boutonniere for your backyard BBQ, but a beautiful centerpiece would be lovely.

Richard founded Bloominous after being shocked with the florists' prices for his 2012 wedding. Richard was not naive or uneducated about the floral industry because he held a General Manager position with a large floral company. I can definitely relate to Richard, but I am the naive one. When A and I were planning our 2011 wedding, I was dead set that our floral arrangements would be around $750 - when in reality, we paid around $2500 (I had to look up the invoice to find that price)! I just threw up a bit knowing that we paid that price.

Now back to my screened porch decor. I could do something like thisthis, or this for all under $50 a centerpiece. My favorite thing is that they offer a paid trial kit prior to purchasing your final order. I think this one would totally match the above deck decor board. Plus, add in a few of these succulents and my table would be completely dressed.

If you have made it to this part of the post - high five you made it to the best part!! Remember when I said that I don't know how to put together floral arrangements? Bloominous has you covered with some YouTube videos that give you step-by-step instructions for their kits. Of course I watched a few of them and I feel like I can conquer the world... or put together a killer centerpiece.

Be sure to check out Bloominous and go say 'hi' on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. Better yet, check out their lovely Pinterest boards - they make me want to renew my vows.

How much money did you spend on your wedding flowers?

Life in the Fast Lane

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Wow - that's really all I can say.

This last month has been just a crazy dream, or nightmare, depending how you look at it. A and I went to Maryland to pick out a new house in just 2 days, we listed our home in Indiana for sale, we booked hotels, rental cars, packing crew, movers, car haulers, and the list goes on. We set aside time to celebrate our friendships with coworkers and friends alike. Dinners were had, beer and wine were consumed, and a few tears shed by the least likely of hearts.

The last few days were filled with the remainder of going away festivities and packing all of our belongings. Every last box was placed on the truck with care and our cars were hauled away.

Now I sit in a hotel room, after eating far too much food from a lovely restaurant in Washington, PA. We don't have a home in Indiana and we don't have a home yet in Maryland. We are homeless. Or house-less if you want me to be politically correct. Its a very weird feeling.

I had every intent of getting a review posted for the most fabulous essential oils. It's all the rage right now and who isn't pushing dōTERRA or Young Living essential oils down your throat? Literally! After working in the spa industry, I like to do my research on companies when they throw out terminology including 'therapeutic' grade, or the like, I would still purchase Insta Natural essential oil over the other brands. That's just my opinion.

Being busy isn't the only excuse for not posting the review. I dropped my precious bottle of peppermint oil and it shattered to pieces. I placed the 4 oz glass jar on the kitchen table and tuned my back. Next thing I hear a rolling sound then BOOM. Peppermint filled the room and I imagine the house still smells of peppermint essential oil.

Please check out all brands of essential oil, especially Insta Natural. Just be sure that the oils are 100% pure.

How has your week been going?

How I Battle Cystic and Hormonal Acne

Thursday, March 12, 2015

Teenage skin sucks. Do you want to know what sucks more? Teenage skin in your twenties. I am talking about cystic and hormonal acne. It's just painful and embarrassing.

I thought this teenage skin would go away on its own or with time. Clearly, that is not the case and despite my efforts with expensive products, I have not be able to clear it up. I've tried Proactive, Rodan & Fields, and prescription medication. All without any luck. I've experimented a bit with DIY products and drugstore products and finally found a combination that is successful for my skin.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The above two product. Oh.my.god. They rock my world currently! I have been using Neutrogena Naturals for some time now, but I used to use it with my Clarisonic. This combination really did nothing for me. In fact, I found that I had more breakouts along my jawline than ever before. Cue La Lune Naturals Konjac Sponge. I was extremely skeptical when La Lune Naturals asked me to review this product because I have used charcoal products in the past and they all dried my skin out to a raisin. But not this one.

How I Battle Cystic and Hormonal Acne

Every night I use a cleansing oil to remove all of my makeup. Then if I am not being lazy, I will follow up with the Neutrogena Naturals purifying facial cleanser and the damp Konjac Sponge. After my face is super-duper clean, I will moisturize with Eclos Moisture Therapy Regenerative Cream. This cream has saved my life over, and over again.

Now in the morning, I will repeat the last few steps that I follow in the evening - Neutrogena Naturals purifying facial cleanser and the damp Konjac Sponge. Then I moisturize with the Eclos cream.

The evening and morning routines are not enough to kick the cystic and hormonal acne to the curb. Several times a week I will use my DIY lemon, cinnamon, honey face mask and this does the trick. On the weeks that I become too lazy to follow this simple routine, I pay the price.

What to Look Forward to in your Late 20's

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Aging. It sucks. During my young college days I was so care free. Student loan for housing, student loan for books, student loan for class, student loan for food. The only thing I had to worry about was making it to class on time. And if I was lucky, my work assignments were done on time. Then I graduated.

Things got real. I needed to look for a big girl job but instead, I went back to school for Massage Therapy. I had a window of 16-ish months between graduating with my Bachelors and getting married and moving from Michigan to California. To me, it wasn't worth the time of looking for a job and wanted a career plan to fall back on.

Now I am in my late 20's gasp. I am married, work full time, do not have kids, my metabolism is slowing down, and wrinkles are starting to form. If you are younger than me, here is what you have to look forward to when you reach your late 20's.

If you are not married, people will question you. And if you are not in any type of relationship people will look at you like you have spinach in your teeth or a bat in the cave. If you don't know that reference, I am sorry. Lucky for me, I got married in my early 20's and wouldn't change a thing!

Your metabolism slows down. I mean like instantly! I spent just over a week on vacation binging on beer and gained nearly 10 pounds. WHAT the what! Plus, exercise is not enough to whip that bootay back into shape. You actually have to eat healthy.

If you are married, people will ask when you are having babies. Why do family members feel the need to ask this question? Do they really want to know everything about our sex lives? Yes, we have sex. No, we are not trying for a baby, yet!

You have to take life seriously. Like get a job, be conscious about saving money for your retirement, consider investments, and all that boring stuff. It's headache inducing thoughts of the future that make us drink until we gain those 10 pounds. See above.

Wrinkles. Oh the wrinkles. This is the true test of how you lived in your early 20's. Take care of your skin - face, neck, and hands. Those areas are the first to show age and I want to look like I am 23-24 again. Forever!

I may not have a solution for the above scenarios, but I can help with the wrinkle department. I have tested many creams, lotions, serums, and ointments. Honestly, it is hard to tell if they are making a difference because I don't have any deep wrinkles. But I am definitely hoping that these potions help me in the coming years.

For example: This serum from AzureNaturals was sent to me to review. I tried the serum on my face and almost instantly broke out in cystic acne. Not cool. So I have been using this on my neck and back of my hands nightly.

The Retinol serum is like most serums I have tried - smooth, not sticky, and absorbs quickly. I will continue to use this bad boy to fight off those wrinkles. I am all about that preventative care.

Do you have anything else to add to my list? What types of products do you use to prevent wrinkles?

Backyard Decor - Globe String Lights

Thursday, January 29, 2015

I would like to think that I am great at decorating my house. In reality, I watch HGTV and DIY network for decorating ideas. The inside of my home is coming along one room at a time, but the outside is definitely lacking.

I have always wanted to have some fun globe lighting draped throughout my backyard since we have six trees back there (like this or this). Yes, six trees. That's a lot of leaves to bag in the fall time. But, that also means a lot of shade in the summer time.

I think the look of globe lights would be dramatic and add just the perfect amount of light in the evening to not be offensive. We currently have two flood lights out back and those things are blinding. Well dreams do come true.

#brillantelights globe strand lights

Viola! I know, I know. The lights are not draped dramatically throughout the yard, but it was raining, snowing, and freezing cold temperatures for multiple days. I knew I wanted to get the Brillante Globe String Lights up as soon as they offered to send me a strand. I couldn't let another day pass with those beautiful globes sitting in the box.

#brillantelights globe strand lights

So A and I sheltered ourselves underneath the shed's overhang and got to work. The 25 ft strand of globe lights fit perfectly at the overhang. The bulbs are incandescent so be careful if you decide to plug the stand in before stringing them up. I might have burned my hand just a little bit.

Now I need to go buy a few more strands of the globe lights so I can get working on the rest of the backyard.

How do you decorate your backyard to have perfect lighting in the evening hours? Have you ever decorated with globe lighting before?

Fill Your Stocking Early (plus giveaway)

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

I am confident in stating that I am not the only candle addict in this whole blogging realm. I mean, I don't know how many Tweets and Instagram photos I see when Bath and Body Works has their famous 2 for $22 3-wick candles. Side note; remember when the candles were 2 for $20. What the hell happened to that?

I believe I have tried all brands of candles and the winner always happens to be Bath and Body Works. Now I bet you are thinking that this post has to be sponsored by the company that I thought provided the very best scented and burning candles. Well, you are wrong!

The candle set that was sent to me by Old Factory Candles might be the all time winner. The scent. The way the candle burns evenly. They are made in the wonderful USA. There were a million options I could choose from. Are you sold yet?

I received a 3-set gift pack in the 50 Shades scent. This included Leather, Jasmine Bubbles, and Vanilla Sex. Oooh, scandalous! The scents are 100% true-to-scent. But then again, I am not sure what Vanilla Sex should really smell like. Either way, it is amazing! Also, the labeling is just adorable.

I had a terrible time trying to decide which gift set I wanted to try. They have New Born Baby, Coffee Shop, Fall Harvest, Happy Holidays, High as a Kite, Spa Day, Vacation, and so much more. Can we just talk about the High as a Kite gift set? What do you think the scents would include? A little part of me wanted the scents to include outdoorsy fragrances. You know, like Clouds, Meadows, Warm Sun. I don't even know what those would smell like. To my surprise, the scents are Cannabis, Incense, Bag O Cookies. It's hilarious!!

Back on topic. I was extremely pleased with the quality of these candles. And I am even more pleased to give one of these gift sets to you. Enter for a chance to win a 3 pack 2 ounce fragrance-themed candle gift set from Old Factory Candles.

Learning... from my skin

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Life is all about learning, isn’t it?! You would think by now I would have learned to stick with my everyday face routine and stop trying new products. But I always think to myself, there might be that one magic product out there that my face would prefer over what I am currently using. And, if I don’t keep trying new products, I will never find that miracle lotion or cleanser.

How about a little history about my skin? I have combination/oily skin – the worst! A majority of my breakouts are around the jawline and cheeks and I have dry patches near my eyes and nose. Also, my t-zone is super oily. Now you all think I am super attractive! My everyday face routine helps so that I don’t get those painful cystic flare-ups and also helps to keep the oiliness to a minimum. But again, I am still trying to look for that miracle product.

After testing out the Vitamin C Facial Toner and YouthExpress Eye Gel from InstaNatural, I am still searching for that magic product to heal my skin. However, the eye gel is pretty fantastic and one of the best eye cream/gel I have used so far.

Here is the breakdown;

Vitamin C Facial Toner – This product mists onto a freshly cleaned face to shrink pores, combat oily skin, hydrate the skin and the Vitamin C is needed to produce collagen. I really was not a fan of the toner and I did notice a few additional breakouts while using this product – remember I said I had temperamental skin?!

Youth Express Eye Gel – This product is a thick cooling gel that claims to diminish dark circles, hydrates, firms, plumps and can also be used on the entire face. When I started testing this eye gel I only used this under my eyes and around the outer corners. After one week, I noticed a decrease in small fine lines I have around my eyes – I was amazed! I am slowly testing this on my forehead and around my lips to avoid fine lines.

Have you found a miracle product for your facial needs?

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

The Dog Makes Love to My Legs

Monday, September 8, 2014

Holy blogger vacation! I wish I could have a one year vacation from work as well, but I don't think that would go over too well with my bosses.

For now, I am back in the saddle and working on tidying up my little home here in the dot com realm. Could you imagine how dusty and dirty things would get in your house if you left them untouched for a year? I will give you forewarning, don't look underneath my sofa. Chances are it hasn't been cleaned in a year.

I am sure you are wondering where I have been. What I have been doing. Am I still the same Jenn behind a traveling Wife. The suspense is real. You will just have to wait for my official welcome home party. In the mean time, let me introduce you to a new product that I could NOT live without right now. Nor when winter comes.

Shea Butter. Have you ever used it? Did you know this moisturizer is completely solid and melts into your skin with your body heat? Maybe I am naive, or possibly I had a very poor education growing up, but when I was invited to review Cleopatra's Choice Shea Butter I thought I would receive a lotion. You know, like the lotion that contains Shea Butter. That's a thing right?

Either way, this stuff is like gold. A and I have been running. a. lot. And for some crazy reason, my legs itch like crazy. To the point that I feel like I have chicken pox all over again. Not cool! This stuff makes my red, itchy skin turn into a baby's bottom. You read that right - a baby's bottom!

I can't keep A, or Roxi, off my velvety soft legs. Okay, the dog has some infatuation with the taste of this Shea Butter which is slightly weird. I am going to say that the vet would not be happy to hear about this.

The only cons I have about this Shea Butter (probably because this is the first time I have ever used Shea Butter) is the scent. I like the nutty scent now, but in the beginning it was almost stomach turning. And one more thing... it is thick. Thicker than the hair on my legs if I didn't shave for 6 months. Great news! You will get used to both over time and your skin will love you.

It is my understanding that Shea Butter has a lot of other benefits beside a moisturizer. Do you know of any other ways I can use this product?

*I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Game Changer

Thursday, August 1, 2013

*Ad - This is a compensated post. All opinions are my own.

I think about 90% of my posts mention beer or alcohol. Actually, let's make that 99% of my posts include the topic of any type of adult beverage. I am not ashamed of that especially when that means that I get contacted by Buffalo Wild Wings to go try their new beer - Game Changer Ale. The Game Changer was designed by Redhook Brewery and is made to pair perfectly with wings.

Now I have never been a huge fan of Buffalo Wild Wings just because chicken wings are not my favorite dietary item but I am not one to turn down a new beer. The nice thing about this craft is that it is a session beer. When I go to most breweries around Indy, their beers are so high in alcohol that I am drunk after 2 beers. That might be great some days but not when you want to enjoy some food and watch a game.
I had to take A with me because he will also never turn down a new beer tasting experience. So when we arrived to Buffalo Wild Wings, we ordered two beers. Game Changer has a great color and holds its head during the entire time you are drinking it. Am I sounding like a beer snob or just crazy? As for the flavor, it has a slightly malty taste but was extremely smooth.
Then I had to try the beer with some wings because they say the Game Changer is perfect with wings and I don't think all beers go well with wings. A and I each ordered a mixture of sauces - Asian Zing, Spicy Garlic, Teriyaki, Parmesan Garlic, and Mango Habanero. I ordered the boneless wings and A ordered the traditional however, all of our wings came out as boneless. It ended up being okay because I could try all of the different sauces with the beer rather than the ones I ordered. Did you know that I absolutely hate biting into a chicken wing with bones? Now you do.
I must say that the beer actually tasted better with the wings. Game Changer is a great way to wash down some food or drown your sorrows - you pick.

I used to choose a lighter beer when eating wings like a Coors Light or Miller Light but now if I am going to be eating at Buffalo Wild Wings I will definitely choose Gamer Changer. I would have never thought to pair an Ale with so many different flavor wings but it works. However, I will not be eating the Mango Habanero sauce ever again in my life. I thought I was going to die!

Follow Buffalo Wild Wings on Twitter and Facebook to hear all the news so you don't miss out.

Have you heard of Game Changer?
What is your favorite beer to drink with wings or while watching a game?

*Ad - All subscription boxes were given to me to review. All opinions are my own.
I have finally come to the end of my subscription box series. Actually I finished my last box last week. And now I can share the recap of all the boxes I reviewed and you can see which one(s) were my favorite.

Here is the break down - from biggest to smallest value.

Bulu Box - $10 worth $59.61
Love with Food - $12 worth $63.52
Pawalla Box - $30 worth $45.33
Green Grab Bag - $15 worth $20.15
My Cotton Bunny - $13.75 worth $15.16
Misto Box - $15 worth $8.38
Juniper - $28 worth $11.80

Favorite box - Misto Box
Most unique box - Love with food

I'm sure the million dollar question would be which box would I actually subscribe to? If I had a million dollars laying around that I didn't want and you guessed it right then you surely deserve it. But if there were a million dollars laying around, I would just take it. Anyway, the box that I would and will be subscribing to is...... Misto Box. I love me some delicious coffee and I am so sad that I already drank through my entire box. Then we I went back to drinking my Folgers I nearly spit that gross stuck across the room.

Do you subscribe to any subscription box?
Did you enjoy this series?

These are a few of my favorite things...

That was when I first began the Revolt Fitness program. Boy, did I learn a lot over the last 12 weeks. Of course I failed some weeks and other weeks I really rocked it out - but isn't that life? So now that I have come to the end of the program as a Revolt Fitness Blogger, I wanted to share everything I love from the program as well as my results.
I feel great even though I was not able to reach my goal of getting down to 22% body fat. My all time favorite thing from the program was being able to workout with A and see all of the changes that our bodies can make, also working out from home is pretty freaking awesome!

My favorite workout from the entire 12 week program was this:
My favorite meal/snack from the entire program was the coconut almond macaroons but I can't find the recipe anywhere so I pretty much suck. But those things are amazing.
You don't have long until the August Uprising starts to get your body in the best shape it has ever been all while learning how to eat right and have fun while working out. You can join for as low as $10 a month or $50 for the annual program. I would say the results are well worth it.

I loved being a part of the Revolt Fitness program and cannot wait to continue the make changes!
